Understanding TDS (Tax Deducted at Source)
What is TDS?
- • TDS is tax deducted at the source of income payment
- • The payer deducts tax before making payment to the payee
- • Deducted TDS is deposited with the government on your behalf
- • You can claim credit for TDS while filing your income tax return
TDS Rates & Thresholds:
- • Interest: 10% if exceeds ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for senior citizens)
- • Rent: 10% if annual rent exceeds ₹2,40,000
- • Professional Fees: 10% if exceeds ₹30,000
- • Commission: 5% if exceeds ₹15,000
- • Dividend: 10% if exceeds ₹5,000
- • Salary: Based on income tax slab rates
Important Points:
- • PAN Required: If PAN is not provided, TDS rate is 20% (higher than normal)
- • Form 26AS: Check your TDS credits in Form 26AS on the income tax portal
- • TDS Certificate: Payer must issue Form 16/16A showing TDS deducted
- • Claim Credit: Include TDS in your ITR to claim credit and get refund if excess
- • Lower TDS: You can apply for lower/nil TDS certificate (Form 13) if your tax liability is lower
